(KMOV) -- One man is dead and his girlfriend is in the hospital after they fell off a three-story building in downtown St. Louis Wednesday morning.

According to officials, the incident happened in the 1100 block of Washington Ave. around 5:50 a.m.

Police say 24-year-old Erik Doyle and his live-in girlfriend accessed the roof of the adjacent building from their living room as they had done multiple times in the past.

Authorities say Doyle stood up and lost his balanced, falling onto the sidewalk. His girlfriend told police she then began screaming and doesn’t remember anything before regaining consciousness at the hospital.

The 24-year-old woman, who suffered two broken legs and a broken hip, said she did not know how she got injured, though a witness told police they saw her fall from the roof.

Doyle, who suffered massive head trauma, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Christina Hill, who lives nearby, said she heard screams about 5:45 a.m. and called 911. She says when she went to the street, she saw Doyle and his girlfriend on the sidewalk in a pool of blood.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
