(KMOV) – Two people are dead following a head-on collision involving two vehicles in Wentzville Monday evening, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened on Northbound 61 just north of Interstate 70 around 4 p.m.

Authorities say both drivers involved in the collision were killed on impact. Police say a man driving a green car was traveling south on Highway 61 when he allegedly crossed the center lane and struck an oncoming truck driven by an unidentified male.

Bother were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators do not know if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Sgt. Terry Potter of the Missouri Highway Patrol said these crossover crashes happen rapidly.

Sgt. Potter said neither driver was reportedly wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Highway 61 was closed for four hours due to the wreck causing a major traffic backup onto Interstate 64 and 70.

All lanes have since reopened.
