ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two men have been charged for allegedly assaulting and carjacking a couple along the St. Louis riverfront early Tuesday morning.
Brian Heidelberg and Demarlo Johnson were each charged with first-degree robbery, three counts of armed criminal action and two counts of first-degree assault.
Officers responded to the riverfront near the Poplar Street Bridge around 12:45 a.m. after one of the victims called for help.
The victims, a man and woman, told police they were sitting on the hood of their car “watching the river” when Johnson and Heidelberg pulled up in a green truck.
Police said Johnson asked the couple for cigarettes, but they said they did not have any.
Johnson returned to the truck. He then went back to the couple and asked for change.
After one of the victims gave Johnson change, Heidelberg got out of the truck, pointed a gun at the couple and began firing.
According to reports, the 41-year-old male victim suffered a gunshot wound to his shoulder and right hand. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Heidelberg got in the couple’s car and fled the area while Johnson drove away in the truck.
Police later located the couple’s car in Brooklyn, Illinois. They followed the vehicle to a location in East St. Louis and also found a vehicle matching the description of the suspects’ truck.
Heidelberg and Johnson were arrested and taken in to custody.
