ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) – Emergency workers fought a three-alarm blaze Tuesday night after a fire broke out at the Village Apartments. in the 8200 block of Watson Road in Marlborough.

Fire personnel say the fire was tough to fight because the flames started in the basement where there was little ventilation. With only one entrance through which to get to the fire, crews were seen using chainsaws and axes to create paths to the flames.

There was a massive amount of smoke from the fire. Firefighters found clothes, bikes and the area of origin was a couch in the basement, which was used for storage.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Affton Fire Department led the response with support from surrounding cities. It is unknown if anyone was inside at the time of the fire though initial reports say two police officers had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Residents on scene say it took crews 15 minutes to arrive.
