The driver of the first vehicle and a woman driving the other car were airlifted to the hospital. The other male passenger was taken to a Belleville hospital before being transfered to a hospital in St. Louis.

All three victims are in critical condition.

Both cars involved sustained heavy damage, and one of the vehicles appeared to have its top cut off so a passenger could be extricated.

Route 4 was closed between Jefferson and Town Hall while crews worked to clear the scene.
