ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com) – Tuesday Police arrested the man they say is responsible for 27 break-ins of vacant homes in St. Charles County in less than a month.

Joshua Middleton, 23, is charged with stealing thousands of dollars worth of copper from vacant homes.

Police were tipped off to Middleton by a resident in the 300 block of Copper Tree Court. Earlier in January, authorities requested the public report any suspicious activity in the areas with vacant homes for sale.

On January 12, a resident reported seeing Middleton looking into the windows of a vacant home on Copper Tree Court. Middleton was seen leaving the area in a truck, and was later pulled over by an O’Fallon officer.

Police say during interrogation, Middleton admitted to burglarizing vacant foreclosed residences in O’Fallon and the surrounding communities.

According to police, he hit 13 homes in St. Peters, 12 in O’Fallon, one in St. Charles and another in Cottleville.

Several police departments were working to solve this case over the course of a month.

According to court documents Middleton is accused of stealing more than $15,000 worth of copper, in addition to the damage to the homes.

Middleton would reportedly park in the garage of the homes, and would spraypaint the basement windows so no one could see in while he removed the copper.

Officials say in his full confession, he told police he researched homes looking for recent foreclosures. Middleton reportedly drove around with officers and confessed to burglarizing homes they didn’t know had been struck.

He’s being held on $50,000 dollars bond.
