HOUSTON –- Police said a late night scuffle that turned into a deadly shooting may be a case of self-defense.
Officers were called to a unit at the Cherry Creek Apartments on Hollister at Tidwell around 11:15 p.m.
They found a man in his early 20s with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was sent to the hospital where he later died.
A subsequent investigation revealed the shooter was the apartment’s renter. Police said the renter was allowing the shooting victim to stay with him temporarily.
A scuffle ensued when the victim allegedly tried to choke the renter’s dog, according to the Houston Police Department.
When the renter intervened, the man attacked him and a fight broke out. Fearing for his safety, the renter said he retrieved his gun and shot the man.
Homicide detectives were looking at the shooting as a possible case of self-defense. The shooter was questioned and released.
The case will be turned over to the district attorney to determine if charges are filed.
