EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- A 14-year-old Wyvetter Younge student is in surgery at Cardinal Glennon tonight after he was shot in the chest while mowing the lawn.
The boy was suspended from school today for scuffling with another boy last week. As punishment, his mother made him mow the lawn and that of the abandoned house across the street. Just before 2 this afternoon, a man carrying an assault rifle, which neighbors describe as a Tech 9, shot the boy. Illinois State Police say nine shots were fired at the teen. Police aren’t saying how many struck him.
East St. Louis Police believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing fight between the gunman and the victim’s 16-year-old brother. Police have taken two people into custody for questioning.
The incident makes the sixth shooting in the last 36 hours in East St. Louis. Of those shootings, three were fatal. There was also a fatal stabbing in that period.
