(KMOV) – One of two timber wolves that escaped captivity in Franklin County was shot to death by a homeowner Monday night.

Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke says the wolf was shot and killed by the man after he saw the animal in a pen with some of his sheep. The homeowner initially investigated after seeing vultures circling over the pen.

Authorities say the homeowner had no idea the wolf had been missing.

The second wolf still remains missing.

Both animals escaped from a caged area at a residence in the 800 block of Moonlight Trail, south of Robertsville, Sunday night.

The remaining wolf weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. The owner says while the wolf is normally not aggressive, it may be defensive and could be unpredictable when hungry.
