(KMOV) – A west St. Louis County town banned texting and driving during city council vote Monday night.

The Manchester council voted six to zero in favor of the ban. Anyone in the city limits can be stopped and cited for handling a cell phone while at the wheel.

The penalty can vary from a slap on the wrist to $1,000 fine.

On January 1, handling a phone and driving will be illegal in Illinois. Missouri has failed to pass a ban on texting.
