(KMOV.com) -- Wellston Police are adding extra officers to patrol to look for copper thieves.

Police said this week thieves damaged air conditioning units at the Housing Authority and the nearby senior center.

At least a dozen reports of thieves taking apart AC units this summer were made to Wellston Police.

“A lot of the air conditioning units now have aluminum fittings and hoses sometimes they look like copper,” said Police Chief Thomas Walker, “They’re doing hundreds, even thousands of dollars worth of damage and they’re getting something that’s of no value to them at all.”

Walker said he has moved officers from another beat over to work the recent copper theft cases.
