Walnut becoming two way street

(KMOV.com) -- Downtown traffic patterns have changed dramatically since the last time morning rush hour traffic was allowed onto Walnut Street and Memorial Drive.

Drivers can now exit I-70 at Walnut Street and instead of a one-way street with only three lanes, there will be six lanes and drivers can go in both directions.

Drivers should be aware that Memorial Drive is closed northbound between Walnut Street and Pine and southbound between Market and Chestnut.

MoDOT officials told News 4 that pedestrian safety efforts will be increased in the area over the next several weeks.

The road changes are part of the CityArchRiver 2015 project which is creating a park over the highway to expand the Arch Grounds west.

If traffic on Walnut is too congested, drivers are advised to go one more exit down to the new Washington Avenue ramp.
