(BaseballStL) -- It'd be easy to get down on the Cardinals bullpen after the home opener debacle. That was about as bad as it gets.

Mitchell Boggs called it the worst outing of his career. I would hope so. He gave up seven runs; six of them earned, and walked four in 1/3 of an inning. He called it "an awful day."

There's really no other way to put it. Trevor Rosenthal and Mark Rzepczynski weren't much better.

Based on what I've read on the social media sites, some Cardinal fans are in full-fledged panic mode over the bullpen situation.

Jason Motte is out indefinitely with elbow soreness, and certainly that's a major concern Motte's absence takes Boggs and Rosenthal out of their normal roles. But the bullpen should be fine.

In fact, it should be one of the team's strengths. Boggs is a proven veteran. He'll bounce back.

Rosenthal's 100 mph fastball will continue to be a major weapon. He gave up an RBI single with a hanging curve on Monday. We might not see that pitch again for awhile. Rzepczynski has been very good so far this season. He got caught up in the 9th inning horror show, but is another guy who has been around long enough to shake it off and come back strong in his next outing.

It's an overworked cliché to say "it's a long season", but in baseball that's very true. The same bullpen that looks hopeless one day can be lights out the next.
Mike Matheny won't hesitate to use Boggs the next time the need arises. Some fans may be in an opening day panic, but Matheny isn't. Try to relax. Still 155 left to play.
