(KMOV.com) Thousands of undocumented workers have a chance at receiving an Illinois state driver’s license starting Tuesday.

More than 250 thousand undocumented workers can begin making appointments to apply for temporary driver’s licenses.

The application process is multistep. To receive a license in December undocumented workers must make an appointment by calling 1-855-236-1155 or by clicking here

Undocumented workers that meet the requirements will be able to receive a license in Springfield or Chicago on December 3, or in Bloomington or Chicago on December 10.

Illinois is one of only six states that will have the program.

Supporters of the program say that this will make Illinois roads safer because every driver will be required to get insurance.

New Mexico was one of the first states to start this program and the governor there sites public safety concerns, specifically drug cartels, as the reason she is against the idea.
