US Bank initially denies refund after roommate steals man's check

 (KMOV) -- Despite documents which say one man stole more than $15,000 as a former employee of a bank, the very same bank is refusing to give a refund to another alleged victim of the same thief.

"I think it’s a joke,” said burglary victim Chris Thomas.

Thomas was mad enough when he found out that his roommate had rifled through his desk drawer, had stolen a check and cashed it for $700.

“The fact we were friends for four years was a pretty big betrayal,” Thomas said.

But when he got official word from US Bank that they wouldn’t be reimbursing him, he was livid.

“It’s ridiculous that I’m in this circumstance and they’re not doing anything,” Thomas said.

Their reason for denying the claim: that Thomas was negligent by keeping his checkbook in a “unsecure location,” in his drawer.

“I didn’t think I needed to keep it in a safe box in my room, but I guess I do,” Thomas said. 

News 4 contacted US Bank and within an hour of the inquiry, Thomas learned the bank was suddenly reversing course and he’d be getting a full refund.

News 4 was able to get the same results from a very similar situation reported in September.

That’s why Thomas says he want other bank customers to beware.

I don’t think anyone is aware of the extent of how much they don’t have your back.

US Bank did not respond to requests for an interview regarding their reimbursement policy.
