(KMOV) – A Granite City school was placed on lockdown Friday morning after a district bus driver mistook a toy gun for a real one.

According to police, a man walked his two children to Worthem Elementary School in the 3200 block of Maryville Rd. and noticed the kids had carried their toy guns with them.

Police said the guns were removed by the parent and he walked back home across a field, which is behind the school.

Authorities said a school bus driver saw the man carrying the toys, which appeared to be a real gun, and called police.

Police said officers located the man and confirmed the guns were toys.

Authorities said the Granite City School District was notified and was notifying parents.
