ST. ANN (KMOV) – A routine traffic stop turned into a large pursuit after two suspects carjacked and abducted a person in the St. Ann neighborhood Monday evening.
Police say two suspects failed to comply with an officer attempting to perform a traffic stop at the intersection of St. Charles Rock Road and Ashby around 5 p.m.
The suspects fled from the officer, but wrecked their vehicle minutes later near the Quik Trip convenience store on St. Charles Rock Road.
According to authorities, the suspects ran from the vehicle before carjacking a man nearby. Authorities say the suspects abducted the male driver of the vehicle before heading towards Interstate 70 into north St. Louis.
Several municipalities within St. Louis assisted in the pursuit as it continued onto Jennings Station Road.
The suspects bailed from the stolen vehicle in the 5200 block of Robin. That's where the victim was recovered safely.
Police were able to take one suspect into custody at the scene after a short foot pursuit. It is unclear if the suspect in custody was the driver.
The second suspect, identified as Charles Staples, eluded police and fled in a third vehicle, a grey Nissan SUV. It is not clear if that vehicle was stolen as well.
Officers lost Staples after a short pursuit but found the vehicle abandoned at Stratford Avenue and Plan Industrial Drive.
He remains at large.
