(KMOV) – A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper and a suspect who robbed a bank in Warren County were injured after a police chase ended with a shootout in St. Charles County on Friday.

According to deputies, a 64-year-old man robbed the First Bank of Dutzow in the 700 block of Bluff Rd. around 9:20 a.m. and drove away on Highway 94.

Deputies said a Missouri state trooper later saw a vehicle matching the suspect’s description on Highway F south of Highway D near New Melle and turned around.

Authorities said the suspect got out of his white sedan and starting shooting at the officer, hitting him multiple times in the chest. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect at least once in his lower body. Deputies said the bullets did not penetrate the trooper’s body because he was wearing a vest. He will likely only suffer bruises, according to authorities.

Both the suspect and officer were taken to the hospital in unknown condition. According to police, the suspect was unconscious when being handcuffed.

Authorities said the trooper is 26 years old and is in his third year with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Highway F was shut down as authorities investigated the scene.

Additional information was not immediately available.
