(KMOV)-- A St. Louis Public School District told News 4 they are taking quick action to try and stop an outbreak of scabies at an elementary school before it becomes widespread.

There have been two confirmed cases in the last three weeks at the Academy of Environmental Science and Math and there could be more.

The district says they are sending a note home with children who have symptoms telling them they cannot return to school until they see a healthcare provider.

School officials say it is possible that there could be as many as 20 possible cases.

Scabies is a skin condition caused by mites that burrow underneath the skin.

District officials say they are currently working the St. Louis City Health Department.
