(KMOV) – The St. Charles City Council is tackling a smoking ban proposal once more, this time they have an exemption.

The Mayor of St. Charles, Sally Faith admits the city wants to protect Ameristar’s bottom line with this potential smoking ban.

Protecting the casino has become a top priority at city hall if smoking was banned on the gambling floor. The casino warned it would see a 30 to 40-percent drop in revenue.

Faith says, “there truly is a value that citizens receive from the gaming dollars and that’s why it’s so important for us to protect it.”

The City announced three public meetings to talk specifically about the proposed ban but one thing not up for debate will be the casino exemption.

When asked if people will think the city is looking out for interests of the casino instead of the health of the residents, Faith said “Well I think you’re right, they will say that and certainly that’s a part of it. If I don’t want to go to a place that’s smoking, I just don’t go.”

The county council has pursued different versions of a smoking ban, some that did not exempt Ameristar.

Emily Rau will continue to follow these public hearings through May for News 4 and KMOV.com
