(KMOV.com) — Salt supplies are spread thin across the country and around the metro area because winter weather simply won’t give up.
St. Charles street crews are mixing a half and half combination of salt and sand to stretch the remaining salt supply.
The city says it only has enough salt left for one or two more storms.
It usually goes through 2,000 tons in a season but has already used 3,500 tons this winter.
Rock salt for sidewalks is also hard to come by.
The Old Town Country Store went through 16 palettes of rock salt a day last month.
“Right now we’re being told no more bag salt until the end of the season,” said owner Braven Dyer.
Salt usually goes for $60 a ton.
