UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV) – Police in Hillsdale, Missouri said Sunday they have arrested a man believed to be driving the same car as seen at the scene of a shooting at Heman Park in University City Saturday night.
Authorities said their K9 officer saw a car matching the description of the man wanted in relation to the shooting and when the officer tried pulling over the car, the driver, Romie Banks, sped away, almost hitting two other units and allegedly attempted to ram another.
Banks wrecked his car and attempted to run before the police dog and his handler were able to detain him, according to police. Police say they found a loaded weapon in his car.
However, University City police have not confirmed whether banks is a suspect in the homicide that killed 20-year-old Mario Wallace.
On Saturday, officers responded to the scene around 7:00 p.m. after being notified that two adult males were wounded by gunfire during the class reunion. One of the victims, a 20-year-old, died of his injuries after he and the second victim, a 39-year-old man, were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The reunion was held during "Picnic in the Park," an annual reunion for many classes at University City High School. The event ended at 6:00 p.m., but authorities say many of the attendees were still in the park at the time of the incident.
Witnesses say more than 1000 people were in the park when shots were fired and that during the evening, various fights broke out between older and younger alumni.
Police investigation is ongoing. Police have not connected the man arrested to the actual shooting and are asking for the public to call them with any information.
