(KMOV.com) – Residents who shop at Schnucks are encouraged to check their bank statement.
Customers reported Thursday their debit and credit card accounts had been virtually charged without their knowledge.
Eric Willen says he shopped at the Bridgeton Schnucks on Wednesday. Thursday, he said his bank called to say there had been a breach on his debit card.
He says given Schnucks’ position as a national retailor, it’s irritating and surprising.
“It would be different if it was a mom and pop store that wouldn’t know better and would have to learn from the school of hard knocks,” he said. “But this is a big chain and you would think they have safeguards in place for that.”
The company said they are investigating claims of credit card fraud and it’s a top priority. In a statement Schnucks said:
"Schnucks is working with credit card companies in investigating reports of credit card fraud. Unfortunately, this is an issue that most retailers have had some experience with and we have made it a top priority. We are in the process of gathering information from all partners in the credit card process. We don’t have any additional information at this time. As always, we urge our customers to please report any unusual credit card activity to their card provider."
