GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Granite City has taken steps to increase safety measures at city hall.

City officials said the city hasn’t had any incidents at City Council meetings, but with the recent mass shooting have prompted them to review security.

Officials said the plan to use a metal detector at the entrance to council meetings along with other safety steps.

"The way we looked at it, if we didn’t take the steps, shame on us if something did happen and we weren’t prepared for it," said Granite City Mayor Ed Hagnauer.

Officials said they plan to keep the council chambers locked when not in use so no one can vandalize or hide before a meeting.
