(KMOV.com) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday to celebrate the opening of the $12.4 million Mid Rivers Mall overpass at Interstate 70 in St. Peters.

The interchange has been open for about a week. It was said to be desperately needed because during heavy traffic cars were backing up on Interstate 70 waiting to exit.

The overpass is what’s known as a “diverging diamond interchange,” and authorities say it can take some getting used to.

“When you use the DDI and you look out your right window and see traffic going in the opposite direction you think you’re in the United Kingdom,” says St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann.

Lane closures will continue during off-peak hours while crews install signs and finish paving.

Funding for the interchange came from St. Peters, St. Charles County and MoDOT.
