(KMOV.com) - A new report shows the odds of surviving a collision with a big rig have improved.

The Insurance Insittue for Highway Safety study said the steel bars or under-ride guardrails that hang from the backs of a tractor trailer can prevent cars from sliding underneath the truck if the car hits the trailer directly from behind.

The report says many tractor trialer manufacturers have been installing under-ride guard rails that are even stronger than what U.S. standards require.

Testing showed crashes involving the outer edges of those big rigs cut put passengers in more danger.
