(KMOV) – Police are investigating a "very serious" serious case of child abuse that happened in Jefferson County earlier this month.

According to police, a 2-year-old boy was severely beaten in De Soto sometime between 9 p.m. Nov. 1 and 1 p.m. Nov. 2. Police say the boy had been in the care of an adult family member when the incident occurred.

The child was taken to St. Anthony’s on Nov. 2 suffering from a fractured left arm, extensive bruising and internal injuries.

Emergency room staff alerted police of the injuries and the child was transferred to Cardinal Glennon Hospital.

Police did not release any more details on the alleged abuse.

An initial report has been presented to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which will determine if charges will be filed.
