(KMOV.com) – Caseyville Police have charged a Belleville man accused of killing a pedestrian while driving under the influence.
According to police, Shaun Schmeirbach, of the 3200 block of Frank Scott Parkway, has been charged with two felonies. Schmeirbach, 32, was charged Friday with one count of reckless homicide and one count of aggravated driving under the influence.
Schmeirbach is being held on $750,000 bond in the St. Clair County Jail.
According to authorities, officers received a call about a possible drunk driver around 2 p.m. Wednesday.
As police were responding to the call, the vehicle, a white minivan, struck a pedestrian while heading south on Illinois Route 157. The minivan reportedly left the road and traveled close to 100 yards before stopping.
The victim, 29- year-old Jamel Rhodes of Caseyville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
Upon release from the hospital, the driver was taken into custody.
