(KMOV.com) – A burglar who leapt from a send floor window to escape from police has been arrested.

Police said 27-year-old Matvey Kovalenko, of Arnold, was charged Tuesday with second-degree burglary, felony theft and resisting arrest.

Authorities said Kovalenko stole a gold high school class ring, a strand of pearls, and other jewelry valued over $1,000 from a home in the 7700 block of Arlington Avenue in Shrewsbury.

According to Shrewsbury Police, Kovalenko entered the home just before 9:00 a.m. Tuesday but was spotted by a neighbor who then called police. Police said they arrived while Kovalenko was still inside the house; he saw them and then proceeded to jump from a second-story window. Police said after jumping, he attempted to run away but was caught and arrested.

Kovalenko has a history of committing burglary.  Authorities said he is on probation for a burglary that occurred in University City.
