Usually when businesses have customers call and place orders, it’s a reason to celebrate, but many Kohl’s customers had been dialing to wrong number and were calling Dr. Rick Bowen of Surry Medical instead.

"We actually didn't think the average consumer was trying to buy our product which is an isolated hospital piece of equipment,” Bowen said. “A lot of their customers, not only were angry, but they had started to leave their credit card numbers with us.”

The reason for the mixup was how closely the phone numbers are. The seven digit pre-fixes are the same, but the medical office’s number is 888, while Kohl's is 855.

“What I was surprised at was the total lack of interest Kohls had for their customers and protecting their credit card information,” Bowen said.

After a week of not returning Bowen’s calls, Kohls responded saying that the mixed up numbers was not their problem.

Kohl’s has not officially commented on the incident.
