(KMOV.com) -- St. Louis County Police said a 17-year-old suspect wanted for a hit-and-run that killed a 2-year-old child turned himself in on Monday.
Police were looking for a white 2013 Dodge Durango involved in a deadly hit and run accident that left Darion Griffin dead and 17-year-old Shariea Evans with minor injuries in the 1500 block of Redman Ave. just after 8:00 p.m Sunday.
Police said they found the SUV abandoned in the 4400 block of Carter Avenue in St. Louis city Monday afternoon.
St. Louis Police said the teen suspect turned himself into the Moline Acrest Police Department later in the afternoon. He said the wreck was accidental and he fled because he was frightened
Witnesses reported that the Durgano was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Redman Ave. near Bellefontaine Rd. when the vehicle struck Griffin and Evans.
Authorities said Griffin was crossing the street to play with Evans, his sister, when he was hit by the SUV. Evans was hit when she tried to pull the boy out of the path of the vehicle.
The driver left the scene immediately heading eastbound on Redman, turning south on Raymond. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where the boy was pronounced dead.
