(KMOV.com) – A project to build a center for the homeless broke ground Wednesday.

Garfield School in Benton Park West will be turned into a place where homeless men and women who suffer from mental illness can find a new place to live.

“It’s going to afford some nice accommodations to some people who really haven’t had anything to call home for a long time,” said St. Louis Director of Human Services Bill Siedhoff.

‘In a lot of cases they have been living in a tent or outside, that’s not an acceptable way of life and it shouldn't’ be for anybody that lives in the City of St. Louis."

The new center will provide apartments and supportive services to the homeless.
