(KMOV) – A 4-year-old girl was hospitalized after she was the victim of a drive-by shooting the Dutchtown neighborhood Thursday night.

Police said the girl and her mother were visiting a home on Louisiana near Itaska when a car drove by around 8 p.m.

The victim and her mother were standing on the porch of the house when shots rang out.

"As soon as we hit the porch thats when he came flying down the street with the music loud and shot like two or three times," said the child's mother Jasmine Draper.

The gunfire was apparently intended for someone standing in a group nearby. Police say the shots were a result of a domestic argument that had been ongoing.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson, speaking at an anti gun violence rally Friday, said the incident is yet another reason to crack down on illegal gun use.

"We need to have stronger gun control laws and consequences when felons when individuals use guns in a illegal way," he said. "I understand the Second Amendement right, everyone’s ability to bear arms but that doesn’t give you the right to use the gun or to shoot somebody.”

Emergency crews rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in serious condition. Friday, she was released and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say witnesses have been helpful in the investigation, but if residents have any information, they are encouraged to call crimestoppers.
