Never-before-seen photos have surfaced of a tragic space shuttle 28 years ago.

Michael Hindes found the pictures (seen in the gallery to the right) of the space shuttle Challenger while going through boxes of his grandparents’ old photographs.

Hindes discovered 26 photos in all, showing the shuttle on the platform, its launch and the tragic explosion as it climbed into the sky.

The 1986 explosion killed all seven crew members onboard, including teacher Christa McAuliffe.

Hindes’ grandfather worked for NASA and got the pictures from a co-worker.

Hindes says his grandfather showed the pictures to others, but they were eventually put with other photos and forgotten.
