(KMOV) – The newest outlet mall in St. Louis County drew huge crowds on Labor Day but also brought challenging traffic issues for area residents.
A News 4 crew visited St. Louis Premium Outlet in Chesterfield on Monday afternoon where long lines of traffic were caused by lack of parking spaces.
Shoppers were parking on the shoulder of the roads leading in and out of the mall.
Uniformed police officers were on hand to help direct the traffic but it was not enough for some shoppers.
One couple told News 4, they turned to head home after seeing the mess and two women from Illinois made it into the mall but left early.
"On the way out, we were really surprised there were people parking on the roads so; it was really crazy coming out. There definitely needs to be more parking there's a lot of land out here , needs to be more parking lots available maybe some kind of shuttle system or something if it’s going to be this crazy , Elizabeth Lingelbach of O’Fallon, Illinois said.
Chesterfield Police say there is an internal pattern or a design problem on the mall property, The are meeting with mall management to see what can be done to make things better.
In a statement released by a spokesperson for the St. Louis Premium Outlet they said they are working on a plan to improve the flow of traffic during busy weekends, including off-site parking and shuttle services.
