(AP) -- A New Jersey judge has ruled a baby’s biological father has no right to be in the delivery room as the mother gives birth.
The man and his fiancé had broken off their relationship after she got pregnant. The father-to-be wanted to be in the labor and delivery room when the baby was born. The judge also said the mother did not need to inform the father when the baby is born.
“What this man was seeking to do was really interfere with the woman’s ability to exercise her own choices about giving birth in privacy,” Rutgers Law Professor Sally Goldfarb said. “That, to me, falls outside of the rights that a father is legitimately entitled to.”
A spokesman for a father’s rights group says the ruling is wrong and means the court views fathers as nothing more than a paycheck and occasional visitor.
The father is not appealing because he said he and the mother have now made arrangements to make both happy.
