(KMOV)—An area road where more than ten people have died in the past year received some safety improvements after a community outcry for change caused MoDOT to step in.
The roads in New Melle and Western St. Charles County carry residential traffic along with huge commercial vehicles on a two-lane highway.
On Thursday, a facelift began to add shoulders and straighten out dangerous curves where eleven people were killed in accidents between January 2009 and February 2010.
“We didn't have a chance to heal because as soon as your heart would start to heal another death would happen,” said Peggy Brazil for Shoulders for Safety.
The group has been campaigning for road improvements ever since to address the complete lack of shoulder, making a drift over the line which have become a fatal mistake for some.
MoDOT improved eleven miles of roadway but still with a lot more to be done, the group kept fighting.
Brazil said “people told us this wasn't possible. And I think this is a great example of how the system really can work."
Crews will continue working through next summer to fix 13 more miles of roadway.
