CENTREVILLE, Il. (KMOV.com) – A Metro East bridge has become a major concern for drivers due to the concrete columns chipping away.

The bridge under Route 157 is near the MetroLink station along Route 161 and between Fairview Heights and East St. Louis.

Officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation knew exactly where the problem was when News 4 showed them the pictures of the bridge.

“That’s really close to one of our sub-headquarters and it is driven regularly by many members of the Department of Transportation,” Joe Monroe, an IDOT official, said.

IDOT officials say they do not have any plans to shut down the road for repairs at this time, but are closely watching and inspecting it.  The chipping concrete and exposed rebar is a precautionary measure that is commonly used by IDOT engineers.
