(KMOV.com) -- The heat will be a concern for thousands of bicyclist as they race around St. Louis this weekend.

The Gateway Cup started Friday in Lafayette Square.  Saturday the event will move to Frances Park, Sunday to The Hill and finishes Monday at Benton Park.

Medical crews will be on stand-by in case anyone gets sick or injured.  They said after four days of riding, cyclists could be in danger.

“That accumulation of heat on the human body even on athletes is a problem, so we’re very concerned,” says Douglas Randell an EMS Training Officer with St. Louis Fire Department.

As of Friday evening, there were no reports of the heat affecting the riders.  But medical workers at the event said it’s bound to happen this weekend.
