(KMOV.com) – Pevely Mayor John Knobloch announced he is stepping down because of help concerns.

The resignation comes after it was revealed that the city had been paying the cellphone bill of Knobloch’s wife for 10 years. Officials said over the 10-year period Knobloch would tell city hall officials the amount of the bill and city hall would send a check to Verizon.

The amount of Knobloch’s wife’s bills was estimated to be more than $1,400.

Knobloch had repaid $3,600 of the bill by the middle of June. Knobloch was estimated to receive $3,300 in taxpayer money for attorney’s fees, resulting in the city only collecting around $250.

Currently, Pevely has no mayor, city administrator, and no city attorney.
