(KMOV.com) – Police say a man was charged after he allegedly hit another man with a hammer during an argument over a lighter in north St. Louis Wednesday evening.

Steven Winston, 54, was charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action on Thursday.

Authorities said Winston and another man were mourning the death of another friend at a home in the 4900 block of Arlington around 6 p.m.

Witnesses told police Winston then accused the other of taking a cigarette lighter and the two began fighting.

Police said that’s when the 54-year-old suspect grabbed a metal mallet from his vehicle and began beating the 55-year-old victim over the head.

Neighbors said they found the man, who was bleeding from the head, lying motionless in the middle of the street.

Police were called to the scene and the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said officers found Winston several blocks away and took him into custody. His weapon was recovered in the vehicle.

Police said they were unable to talk to the victim because he was unconscious.

A judge ordered Winston to be held on a $75,000 cash-only bond.
