MCS identify teen girl found in Columbia, Ill

(KMOV) – Police have identified a missing teenage girl who was found dead found at a home in Columbia, Ill. on Thursday.

Police officers were called to the 200 block of Riebeling around 12 p.m. in search of a missing person. Upon arrival, officers discovered 17-year-old Erin Schneider dead inside the home.

Schneider’s family had reported her missing and requested a welfare check of the home after it was the last reported place she was seen. 

Officers say a person answered the door to the residence but it is unknown what their relation to the victim was.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, the Major Case Squad was activated around 1:30 p.m.  An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning to determine Scneider’s cause of death. 

The Major Case Squad has not released any more information pertaining to the investigation.

An official with the Columbia Police Department did say they are talking to two persons of interest but no suspects are in custody. 

Authorities said they are not actively searching for a suspect.

Records show that the person who owns the home is on the Illinois State Sex Offender Registry. The homeowner’s name has not been released.

Detectives are going door-to-door talking with neighbors on what they could have seen or heard pertaining to the incident. 

The investigation is ongoing.
