(KMOV) – A loaded gun was found in the backpack of a student at a north St. Louis County middle school on Tuesday.
Westvew Middle School officials say several kids from the sixth to eighth grade were taken into police custody for questioning.
No word yet on arrests or charges but the school did send home a letter with parents, letting them know what happened.
Principal Valeska Hill admits the school was put on a temporary lockdown after a student told a teacher there was a gun on campus around midday.
Staff and county police searched the school ultimately finding the handgun in a backpack left alone in a hallway.
While the students plans remain a mystery Officials tell News 4 other kids were never in danger—that’s why parents were never called or emailed earlier in the day
“It wasn’t an immediate threat as soon as we were given the information that we could potentially have a weapon, the powers at be went on their investigation,” said Hill.
Director of Safety and Security for the Riverview School District, Kelli McCrary said several students are being investigated but for such a disturbing incident she’s thankful one young person spoke up
“It is definitely a concern that we found a weapon on our campus ground but we are very appreciative to the student who came forward and let us know, said McCrary.
