(KMOV) -- Originally scheduled as an off day for spring break, local school districts had to bring in many substitute teachers to fill in positions on Friday after teachers said they had travel plans they could not cancel.
"When we had the last snow storm, we had a snow day,” Ladue Schools Communications Director Susan Dielmann said. “That put us over the top and gave us a day we had to make up. Both teachers and families already had plans.”
On a normal day, the Ladue district averages 20 teachers out sick, but on Friday there were 60. Dielmann said teachers and the district had ample time to plan for the substitutes so the quality of teaching was not compromised.
The Ladue district had 74 percent attendance on the makeup day and the Parkway School District brought in 185 substitute teachers and had attendance of 85 percent.
