(KMOV) – Police are investigating after two brothers from Michigan driving through St. Louis caught someone breaking into their vehicle while walking back from the Arch early Thursday morning.

An Iraq war veteran and his brother said they were making their way from Michigan to Texas when they decided to stop in the 100 block of N. Broadway around 3 a.m. to get a couple pictures of the Arch.

Authorities said the victims were walking back to their vehicle when they noticed the lights were flickering.

Police said that’s when the brothers noticed two men inside the vehicle.

“I saw a gentleman crouched down in my car,” said veteran Jason Spradlin.

The victims shouted at the suspects, who got into their own vehicle.

Spradlin said he then tried writing down the suspects’ license plate number. That’s when the suspects fired four shots into the air, one of which went through a 17th-floor window at the nearby Hyatt Hotel.

The suspect then fled the scene with the victims’ wallet, computer and phone charger.
