(KMOV)--  A University of Illinois student was scammed into paying thousands for a cab ride.

The student had arrived at the Chicago O’Hare Airport from China when a fake cab driver offered to drive him to the university for $1,000.

Police say he ended up charging $4,200 which the student paid.

Authorities claimed the student did not the culture and felt like he didn’t have a choice.

Tom Geis with the University Of Illinois Police Department said “The culture is somewhat different there then it is for law enforcement in this area-and we also do some programming with international students on avoiding scams and being victims of crime."

University officers say they are working with Chicago Police to locate the scam artist.
