(KMOV.com) – Undocumented workers in Illinois were allowed to begin registering for temporary licenses starting Tuesday.

There are at least 500,000 undocumented workers in the state. News 4 spoke an official in the Secretary of State’s office and was told that only 12 people applied for licenses on Tuesday.

Undocumented workers can only obtain a license at two locations currently, Chicago and Springfield. The state plans to open four more locations by the end of Dec.

The temporary visitors driver license program cost the state one million dollars to implement.Illinois is one of only six states that offer the program.

Supporters of the program say that this will make Illinois roads safer because every driver will be required to get insurance.
