(KMOV) – An indoor high-speed go-kart track in St. Louis County now sells alcohol to customers, the only such facility in the area to have a liquor license.
More than 40,000 strapped up to race go-karts last year at Pole Position in Crestwood. Beer can now be purchased in the same building.
Crestwood mayor Jeff Schlink and the board of alderman approved the business’ liquor licens after hearing a presentation from its owner.
“He did a very good job to assure us the safety of any guest that would be there, that they’re safe and are not going to drive impaired,” said Schlink.
Pole Position Owner Mike Johnson says systems are in place to prevent people from having a beer before getting behind the wheel of a go-kart.
He says once someone purchases a beer, they are locked out of a race for six hours. The beer is positioned in a cooler behind the counter. There are also beer advertisements in the building.
Johnson says his goal isn’t to become a bar, just cater to his customers.
“The general public we sell very few,” he said. “Most of the reason we have the liquor license is for corporate events and parties, which is a big chunk of our business.”
