(KMOV.com) - A Metro-East race track will soon be under the control of local ownership.

Local developer Curtis Francois announced he will be purchasing Gateway Sports Park on Tuesday. Francois has been in charge of the Madison, Il race track since 2012, but did not own the track. It was previously owned by Delaware-based Dover Motorsports

Gateway opened in 1997 and annually held NASCAR, Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART), and National  Hot Rod Association (NHRA), events. The track closed in 2010 but re-opened in 2012.

In a release, the racetrack says Francois is going to put in place a $5 million capital improvement plan which includes a plan to build a track for kart and open wheel racing. Gateway is also looking to schedule outdoor concerts at the raceway.
