(KMOV.com) – Thousands of soldiers stationed at Fort Leonard Wood flew out of Lambert Airport on Friday.

Between 4,000 and 5,000 soldiers were starting a two-week break to visit family for the holidays.

The soldiers arrived at the airport to find food and music provided by the USO following a two-and-a-half-hour bus ride.

Major General Smith, the commanding general of Fort Leonard Wood, said it was an important time for the soldiers to be able to “regroup and spend time with family”.
